Students learn about the Puritans to gain an understanding of American Colonization, changes in Europe, Colonist-Indian relations, the concept of religious liberty, early democracy, and with modern aspects of Puritanism such as the Puritan work ethic, religious identity, and traditions such as Thanksgiving and novels like the Scarlet Letter.
Students have learned about Puritans and Pilgrims in elementary school and middle school, but in a limited way. They learned that Plymouth Colony was settled by separatists from the Church of England who wanted to avoid religious persecution. And that the Massachusetts Bay Colony was settled by the Puritans to avoid religious persecution.
